When Mercy Kissed Grace

Mercy and grace are often referred to as “cousins” but I think they’re more like “siblings” especially in God’s world. In our world, we can extend mercy to another but not always grace. Many times I have heard a debt collector say, “I understand, however…you must make a payment before such and such a date…” As a person with feelings, they were sorry for me and my situation but they still had a job to do so there was mercy but not grace.

When God became man and went to Calvary for mankind, He not only felt mercy for our broken condition, He also extended grace. He took the punishment we couldn’t pay for and now we have the choice of accepting not only His mercy but also His grace.  I know I need both in my life on a daily basis.

We have no idea how to maneuver through life especially in these unprecedented times. And, we don’t know what decisions will work for our good or downfall. We don’t have all the answers. In fact, we don’t have most answers.

There is no instruction manual that lays out our future. We need someone that can see further than we can. And, that’s Jesus. He died in our place. He sees what our lives should be like and what they can be like and what’s more, He extends grace with mercy. All we have to do is ask Him to save us, to fill us with His Holy Spirit. When we’re saved, then we have access to all He wants to share.

We can ask Him for wisdom, we can follow Him safely because He won’t lead us to disaster. People can only go so far. And, what’s more is, our decisions are more so governed by our feelings, but God is sovereign. He will do what is right always.

What about the bad decisions we make?

Are you living in the aftermath of bad choices? Sometimes it feels like things will never change when we make our own bed of Hell. But again, take it to Jesus. Ask His forgiveness and do all you can to not repeat those mistakes.

He will give you mercy and grace. No, the situation may not change, maybe that’s because He wants you to really understand the consequences so you won’t want to do it again. And, in that case, His grace will help you remain stable while He changes things and circumstances. I’ve seen Him do this for me.

If I need mercy and grace, I much rather fall into His loving hands than anybody in the world. Whether He changes things overnight or over years, I’m still in good hands with Him.
