Jesus, The Rock of my Salvation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Remember the story of the Three Little Pigs? That was a popular one and even turned into cartoon skits and while as a child it was entertaining, there’s something very spiritual about the moral. It relates to Matthew 16:18 when Jesus asked His disciples what others said who they thought He was. Some said He was a prophet, some said John the Baptist for example. But Peter got it right. He said Jesus was Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus then further says …”You are Peter, upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” Why did He call Peter a rock? Well, his name comes from the Greek word “petros” which actually does mean rock and it wasn’t a put down. No, it was a huge compliment!

In the story of Three Little Pigs, only the third pig’s house stood against the wolf, why? Cause he built it on a solid foundation – brick. The other pigs’ houses blew down easily because straw and sticks didn’t have the strength to stand on their own. We, too, must build our lives on a solid foundation. There’s so many things happening around us that get us sidetracked if we’re not careful. We can easily end up building our emotional houses on straw and the first sign of trouble will instantly break down our walls.

If you’ve ever really looked at a rock in your hand, you’ll notice how hard the texture is. You can throw it far into a river which I always loved to do and it can hurt too if you get hit by one. It doesn’t blow away from the wind or rain. It holds its shape. Jesus is that Rock that will stand the test of time. He doesn’t welter, He doesn’t falter. No one can steal Him away or destroy Him.

This verse is a comfort to me because if not for Jesus, there’s no telling where I’d end up. I need someone whom I can lean on 24/7 everyday. Someone who won’t run away when troubles arise; someone who can deal with all my negative thoughts; someone who encourages me every time I feel like I can’t go on. That’s Jesus… my Savior, my solid foundation, The Rock of my Salvation.
