My mom taught me about fear early on. “Don’t put your hand on that hot iron!“, she’d say. But I’m a kid and I just had to know what would happen. After a few times of yelling at me, finally she didn’t say anything and let me touch the iron. Of course I’m screamed and cried like crazy! She held me and worked to heal my hand, luckily I only touched it with a couple of fingers and not my whole hand. After the pain started to subside, she said, “that’s why I told you not to touch the iron“, “now do you understand“? I nodded “yes” still whimpering. It was tough love but it taught me to have a healthy fear for something that if used wrong could end up hurting me.

Fear has different meanings like “fearing The Lord” which means respect. This can also be applied to things like: using a chef’s knife, a hammer or driving a car because we respect these items and know that as easily as they can help us but if used improperly, the results can be catastrophic.

The other side of fear is what I want to focus on in this post. The enemy of our souls uses it well, it’s one his perfect weapons against us. It can take many forms like: (a) fear of the unknown (b) fear of the future, what’s going to happen to me?, and then there’s (c) the what-ifs. What if this or that should happen? There’s a number of things that can make us afraid.

I’ve struggled being afraid, anxiety and panic attacks. In 2015, I suffered a nervous breakdown that developed into PTSD due to a specific traumatic experience that happened to me. Since then, I’ve made some significant changes to heal, one of them was looking in the Bible for every scripture I could find having to do with fear. So, one night as I was doing my Bible study, 2 Timothy 1:7 was the daily verse.

For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of love, power, and of a sound mind.” (KJV).

Notice that God calls it the “spirit of fear“. That means fear comes from Satan. The second part of the verse is that God gives us love, power, and a sound mind (calming mind). This kind of fear is the enemy’s weapon and we can overcome it!

As I studied further, I saw this verse…

” perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18 KJV).

Satan uses fear as a way to torment our souls and to conjure up scenarios in our minds to get us thinking of “what could happen”. Fear then paralyzes us so that we’re afraid to do anything. Expert studies showed 85% of what we’re afraid of never happens.

When we let the love of God permeate us, fear has no place to stay. When we focus on God’s love for us, what’s He’s done and who He is, there’s only peace, hope and joy. It’s time to put fear in its place. I love this song, “No Longer Slaves“, read the lyrics:

“No Longer Slaves” (lyrics)

You unravel me with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
‘Til all my fears are gone

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

From my mother’s womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again
Into your family
Your blood flows through my veins

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

I am surrounded
By the arms of the father
I am surrounded
By songs of deliverance

We’ve been liberated
From our bondage
We’re the sons and the daughters
Let us sing our freedom

You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me
And I could stand and sing
I am a child of God…

You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
You drowned my fears in perfect love
You rescued me
And I will stand and sing
I am a child of God

Yes, I am
I am a child of God
I am a child of God
Yes, I am
I am a child of God
Full of faith
Yes, I am a child of God
I am a child of God

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

We don’t have to give in to fear, we are children of God! If you don’t know Jesus today, then please give your heart to Him, confess your sins and ask Him to be your Savior and Lord today. Ask Him sincerely to fill you with His Holy Spirit and He will.

The Bible says Jesus will not turn away a repentant soul. And if you have made Him your Savior and Lord, find a Bible-believing church that isn’t afraid to preach God’s truth. We need the company of other Christians so we can build each other up. Together, we will overcome fear and all the whiles of the devil. May God bless you abundantly today.
