I always wanted a best friend for as long as I can remember. Growing up on the south side of Chicago in a pretty bad neighborhood didn’t lend any chances to make friends. It was just my mother, me and my younger brother that I helped raise. So to me, I felt more like his mom than a sister or a friend.
I longed to have a girl friend that I could hang out with, dress up and do all the girly things as a kid. So, it was lonely and maybe why early on I drew and wrote my own comic books. I always loved making up my own characters because when you’re alone a lot, you develop a big imagination.
I actually didn’t meet my BFF until I was out on my own living and working in Georgia. I was in the 20s when I met Kassandra and she was and still is the sister I never had. We quickly connected, have you ever met someone like that? It seemed like she had always been in my life. We have a lot in common and many of our life experiences were very similar. She loves Jesus like I do and our doctrinal beliefs are the same which today is very rare. I know God blessed me with her!
There’s no price tag on a good, genuine friend. And, it’s so important to relish the best friends we have. They are as rare as gems.
Now, let me tell you about the “Bestest” BFF we could ever have: Jesus. There’s certainly no one like Him.
When I’m afraid, lonely, upset, confused even…I can pray to Him for help. He lives and is alive forevermore (Revelation 1:8). He cares for me (1 Peter 5:7), He leads me through the mazes of life (Psalm 23:3). David said it best in Psalm 116:1:
“I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.”
He’s the friend that sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). Have you ever been closer to a friend than a biological relative? Sometimes our true friends are not blood related.
Today and everyday I’m so grateful to have The Lord Jesus in my life. In all my weaknesses, and I have a lot of them!, He helps me, strengthens and encourages me. His Word comforts me and that I can pray any time and know He’s there always listening is soothing to my heart.
I’m also forever grateful for my friend Kassie, life is so much better when God gives us the wonderful friends we have.
