Doing the Best Job I can for Him

I have done jobs or tasks that I was totally unqualified for. I had no experience and sometimes not enough time to prepare beforehand. All I had at my disposal was prayer and God’s ok. And actually that was all I really needed. Now, I’m not saying we should go apply for jobs where we have no experience in the industry. That would be like a car salesman applying for a job to be an astronaut. What I am saying is that there will be times when you’ll be asked to perform a duty where God appoints you and you’ll feel totally unqualified, nervous, and inept. However when God is in something, He takes care of His end.

Case in point, years ago I got hired to work in the Administrative Services department of a temp employment agency. My job was to ensure every department within the company had certain documents, manuals, forms, and any other administrative support they needed. I did this job for a couple of months when my boss suddenly and without warning promoted me to manager. He wanted me to hire people under me and my job was not only to meet the daily deadlines, but to supervise and oversee those I had hired. In addition, I was responsible for their quarterly and yearly reviews which meant I had to grade their performance. Talk about scared to death! I told my boss he had chosen the wrong girl! But he insisted that I could do the job. I remember praying a LOT and doing some research at night so that I could have some kind of knowledge of what a supervisor is supposed to do. I received no on-the-job training.

Somehow God had chosen me to take this role on and He indeed helped me. I remained in this role until my career changed to graphic design and then I joined the marketing department and my department was no longer needed since the organization went through a restructure. There were many days and nights that I was nervous, but I met the challenge and I’m better for it. I’m able to run my own business because of the knowledge I picked up supervising others. Every task we perform outside our comfort zones strengthens us in some way. It stretches us and sometimes it hurts but we come out more confident and accomplished. God wants us to be strong Christians and so the only way to grow is to step up into the unknown. But you never have to worry that you’ll be alone. God knows where you are and He’ll send you help…that may come through people or other unlikely sources. All He requires of you and me is that we do the best job that we can for Him.
