It’s not uncommon to question whether we’re hearing from God correctly on a matter and it’s not uncommon to misunderstand and make a wrong choice either.
I’ve made decisions that I thought was coming from God and it turned out I missed the mark altogether. But, I think the worst thing I could do afterwards is to second guess every decision I will ever make AND to tell myself I’m incapable of hearing from God.
When I write “hearing from God“, I’m not talking about actually hearing a voice speak to me as if I’m talking to a friend…He can speak that way but mosttimes, it’s more of an inner knowing…like a peace that He gives me on the inside. And, He will also use other means to communicate like a scripture will suddenly come to me or God may speak through another person and it’ll be the answer I need.
Hearing from God isn’t always straightforward so we have to be tuned in to the Spirit more so and not to:
- Our own opinions and feelings
- Advice from others which can add confusion
- Spending too much thinking about the situation itself
- Satan’s attempts to plant doubt in our minds, and
- Impatience. All of these can sway our decision making one way or another.
In my case, if I have a peace about something, I usually go for it. If I miss God however, I just go back to Him in prayer and the thing is, He already knows how to get me where He is leading.
So, even when I goof up, He has many ways to help me and still get the glory in the end.
So to sum it all up, I think it’s a waste of time to feel sorry for ourselves if we make a wrong choice and second guess future decisions. Don’t allow doubt and fear to creep in.
Everyday, we have to make choices and while God wants us to use wisdom, He also doesn’t want us to be afraid so much so that we hesitate moving forward. Fear can cripple us that we won’t make any decision at all.
Keep this verse in mind:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” – John 10:27. God knows how to speak to us and believe me we know the Master’s voice too!
